Problems Involving Right Turning

Direction Question: This section of verbal reasoning revolves around the various directions. It consist of questions involving all sort of direction puzzle. Candidate is required to make a successive follow-up of directions and ascertain the final direction or the distance between two points. The test is meant to judge the candidate,s ability to trace and follow correctly and sense the directions correctly.

Directions: There are four basic directions North N, South S, East E, West W and four cardinal directions North East NE, North West NW, South East SE, South West SW to help the candidates know the directions. The figure shows all the directions

Problems Involving Right Turning: These type of questions are solved taking into consideration direction in which the object or the person is facing. Turning Right will be according to the person or object.  The right and left movement of a person is always with reference to the body moving in the scenario. It is not with respect to the person who is solving the questions.

Illustration 1:  One day, Ravi left home and Cycled 10 Km southwards, turned right and cycled 5 km and turned right and cycled 10 km an turned left and cycled 10 km. How many kilometers will he have to cycle to reach his home straight ?

A. 10 km            B. 15 km             C. 20 km              D.  25 km

Answer: B

Solution: Let us suppose that, Ravi starts from home at A, moves 10 km southwards reaches point B, turns right and moves 5 km reaches point C and then again turns right and moves 10 km reaches point D and finally turns, left and moves 10 km reaches point E.

Thus, his distance from  initial position A = AE = AD + DE = BC + DE = (5 + 10) km = 15 km.

Hence, the correct option is B

Illustration 2: I am facing South. I turn right and walk 20 m. Then I turn right again and walk 10 m. Then I turn left and walk 10 m and then turning right walk 20 m. Then I turn right again and walk 60 m. In which direction am I from the starting point ?

A. North           B. North-west        C. East          D. North-east

Answer: D

Solution: The movements of the person are from A to F, as shown in Fig. Clearly, the final position is F which is to the North-east of the starting point A.
